Family recovering after driver slams car into
home
By Paul Nelson
The Sun News
In a matter of seconds, Billy-Joe Alger went from relaxing on the couch watching
television and talking to his wife's brother to picking himself off the living-room
floor of his mother-in-law's mobile home in Longs.
The 24-year-old bolted out the back door to investigate what struck the house.
He found a car with its hood wedged under where the front door and porch once
stood, and the gravely injured driver was still inside. Authorities have identified
the man, who was impaled by a piece of wood from the house, as Umberto Macario
Palacios, 25, of Shallotte, N.C. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Horry
County Chief Deputy Coroner Dan Bellamy.
Sonny Collins, a spokesman with the state Highway Patrol, said Palacios hurtled
through a stop sign at the intersection of S.C. 905 and East Beargrass Road
and then plowed into the house around 11:48 p.m. Friday. Police say alcohol
is thought to be a factor in the crash.
Fearing that the Chevrolet Corsica might explode, Alger reached in and shut
off the car as his mother-in-law Sharon Brown called 911. Two other people
also lived in the house. Alger was visiting with his 3-year-old son. No one
in the house was hurt.
The family, however, was displaced because of the damage to the home.
The Horry County chapter of the American Red Cross put them up at a North
Myrtle Beach hotel Friday night, and their landlord has allowed them to stay
at another home in the community, Sharon Brown said. The family had been in
the house for about two months.
"Everyone was freaked out, and my sister-in-law started to cry,"
said Alger, who lives a few miles away in Longs. "He hit the house so
hard that the back wall pulled away from the floor and the whole house moved
about a foot and a half in both directions."
The house also was knocked off the foundation blocks in the front, Alger said.
Sharon Brown recalled that the impact of the crash was so jarring that it
sent her husband, Charlie Brown, from one end of their queen-size bed to the
other and dumped her off the chair she was sitting on at the time.
"It sounded like something had exploded ... or there was an earthquake,"
she said Sunday.
Dishes in the cabinet became projectiles and food in the refrigerator was
strewn about the house, she said. She said her son's bedroom, the kitchen
and the bathroom suffered extensive damage.
Brown said she recognized Palacios from seeing him playing soccer and hanging
out with friends in the neighborhood. The wreck is under investigation, police
said.

Roads leave no shortage of action for MB police
By Brock Vergakis
The Sun News
It wasn't a good weekend to be a parked car in Myrtle Beach.
Or a concrete pole. Or a tree.
Even stopping in traffic was risky for several motorists who were rear-ended
by other drivers who were charged with driving under the influence.
It was a weekend filled with crashes.
One woman was thrown off her mo-ped after running a red light and hitting
a car Saturday at the intersection of 21st Avenue North and Oak Street.
The Myrtle Beach woman suffered a brain hemorrhage and was taken to the Medical
University of South Carolina in Charleston, where she is listed in critical
condition and is expected to be fine, Myrtle Beach police Investigator Jim
Allen said.
Police also were kept busy Saturday after a 24-year-old Myrtle Beach man struck
three different cars in three different locations. He was charged with driving
under the influence of alcohol.
The first wreck occurred when Johnny Diaz Cruz rear-ended a stopped car on
North Ocean Boulevard about 5:20 p.m., then fled and dropped his passenger
off, Allen said.
He then picked up two other people and proceeded to hit another stopped car
on U.S. 17 near Ninth Avenue South, police said. Once again, he fled the scene,
according to incident reports, and dropped off one of his passengers.
He finally was caught after a citywide search by police after he hit a car
at the intersection of U.S. 501 and Oak Street about 8:10 p.m.
When police apprehended him, Cruz did not have a driver's license and had
open containers of alcohol in the car, Allen said.
Cruz faces 14 different charges and $4,000 in fines if convicted. A passenger
faces charges of public intoxication.
But that wasn't the only case of a driver being involved in multiple crashes
Saturday.
A 15-year-old N.C. girl driving without any parental supervision hit a stopped
car on U.S. 17 Business, then fled and hit a concrete post and tension wire
about 20 yards away on the corner of Fifth Avenue South.
It took police about 30 minutes to find the girl, Allen said.
When they did, they also found that she had hit a parked car on 311 N. Ocean
Blvd.
Those wrecks came after a crash Friday evening near Mr. Joe White Avenue when
a Myrtle Beach man drove off the road and hit a city sign, several trees and
shrubbery before ending up in a pond with his car partially submerged.
Three city firefighters saw the crash happen from their station, rushed to
Futrell Park and performed CPR on the driver before he was taken to a hospital.
Police say the man might have been under the influence of drugs, Allen said.

Man reports attempted robbery near home
A Myrtle Beach man told police he was attacked Tuesday while skating in front
of his home in the 400 block of North Chester Street.
Police said a small group of men approached the man from behind about 9:30
p.m., demanded money, then hit him in the face.
The man said he saw a knife, but it wasn't used against him. Police said the
men left with no money because the victim had none.
No one has been charged.

Man charged in fatal attack
Stabbing at Wal-Mart killed one person, injured another
By Jessica Foster
The Sun NewsThe man accused of stabbing a woman to death and attacking her
companion in a Wal-Mart parking lot was charged Thursday with murder, as well
as assault and battery with intent to kill, police said.
The fight broke out in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart on Beaver Run Boulevard
in Surfside Beach shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday.
When Horry County Police Officer Frank Venegas arrived at the scene, he was
flagged down by four individuals who "had a Hispanic male on the ground,
face down handcuffed and legs shackled with a dog leash," according to
Venegas' supplemental police report.
Liuvia Facundo Sanchez, 20, of Garden City Beach, was taken to Grand Strand
Regional Medical Center, where she died, said Tamara Willard, Horry County
deputy coroner.
Mauricio Leal was stabbed, apparently as he tried to defend the victim, police
said. He also was treated at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center and discharged,
hospital officials said.
Ardelio Lopez, 27, was charged Thursday and was being held at J. Reuben Long
Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
Neither a motive for the attack nor a relationship between the victim and
suspect have been determined.
"The only thing we can tell at this point is they are acquaintances,"
Maj. David Avant said.
Employees of nearby stores saw the ambulances and police cars, but some said
they didn't find out what happened until later.
"I was just standing at the front window, and I didn't know what was
going on. I just thought there was an arrest," said Stephanie Veilleux,
an employee of the nearby Cato clothing store.
"I saw this Wal-Mart guy chasing a ... man across the parking lot, and
then he tackled him," she said.
Police and other sources said a Wal-Mart employee was instrumental in capturing
the suspect, but Wal-Mart wouldn't identify the employee Thursday.
Avoid guys with Hispanic names, whether they are behind the wheel or in the Wal-Mart parking lot.
