Horry County Crime Report 1999 Volume 3

These are taken from the police blotter, which is sporadically published by Myrtle Beach Access. These crimes were reported in Horry County, South Carolina. Some of the more interesting I've marked in red.

AYNOR
Nov. 23

Abandoned juvenile: An 8-year-old boy wasn't picked up after school at Aynor Elementary and was taken to the Police Department. The boy's mother said the boy wasn't picked up earlier because she was at work. The boy's mother said she had called the school and informed someone that she was going to be late.

Nov. 22
Gas drive-off:
Someone pumped $20 worth of gas and didn't pay for it. The incident occurred at a convenience store on U.S. 501.

Nov. 21
Petit larceny:
Someone stole a bottle of wine from a business on US 501. The wine was worth $3. A convenience store employee said the man came in and placed $3 on the counter for several items he had purchased. The employee said the man then grabbed a bottle of wine from the counter and said, ``I know you can't sell me one, but I'm going to get one anyway.'' The man then left the store.

CONWAY
Nov. 12
Arson: A fire started in the boys bathroom on the bottom floor at Conway High School. Toilet tissue rolls had been set on fire, causing $100 damage. Two juveniles were arrested.

Nov. 5
Pointing a firearm:
A 24-year-old woman said she and a 31-year-old man argued at a traffic intersection. She said the man pointed a small handgun at her. He was arrested.

Injured person: A man was walking on US 501 from Myrtle Beach to Williamsburg County. He attempted to jump a ditch, fell and hit his face on the ground. He was bleeding from the nose and mouth and was taken to the hospital. The man had been drinking.

Nov. 3
Strong-arm robbery:
A 16-year-old boy said two boys approached him and another person. The boys said he owed them money. He said they threw him to the ground, put a coat over his face and took $10 from his pocket.

Nov. 2
Criminal domestic violence:
A 19-year-old man and 29-year-old woman argued at a Neely Drive residence because she said he looked at another woman. He said he grabbed her and threw her on the bed. She said he got a knife and told her to kill him. She tried to get away from him, but he cornered her. She grabbed the knife from him and stabbed him in the chest area. She said he had choked her. She was arrested and he was taken to the hospital, where he received two stitches.

GEORGETOWN
Nov. 24
Stolen register: Someone took a cash register with about $8 inside from Parson's Radiator on Front Street. The business owner said he left his office for about 10 minutes to work on a radiator, and when he returned the register was gone.

LORIS
Nov. 27
Public intoxication:
A man, whose age was not given, was arrested after he came into the Police Department smelling of alcohol and walking unsteadily. The incident occurred on Walnut Street.

Public intoxication: A 46-year-old man was arrested after he was found to be unsteady on his feet and with alcohol on his breath at a residence on Maple Street. While in jail, a police officer discovered the man had a crack pipe in his coat pocket.

Nov. 26
Public intoxication:
A 51-year-old man was arrested after he was found smelling of alcohol and standing on Holly Street with 100-proof vodka in his back pocket.

Nov. 25
Disorderly conduct:
A 22-year-old man was arrested after he fought at a bar on Broad Street.

Nov. 23
Strong-arm robbery:
A 29-year-old man said another man stole his gold necklace worth $400 and ran. He said the man jerked the jewelry from his hand on Maple Street.

Nov. 22
Public intoxication: A 74-year-old man was arrested after the police chief found him unable to stand up. The man also had slurred speech. The incident happened on Walnut Street.

MYRTLE BEACH
Nov. 28
Shoplifting:
A 45-year-old man put three packages of steaks in the front of his pants at Food Lion at 1430 S. Kings Highway. He tried to leave without paying for the $32 worth of meat. He was arrested.

Domestic dispute: A 26-year-old woman said her 25-year-old boyfriend verbally assaulted her and spit on her at a Second Avenue South residence. He denied spitting on her. The man had blood coming from his nose, but she said this was because he yelled so loudly.

Shoplifting: A 36-year-old man drank a Heineken beer and stuffed the bottle into his pants at Food Lion at 1430 S. Kings Highway. He admitted drinking the beer and said he knew beer couldn't be purchased that day, which was Sunday. He was arrested.

Simple assault and battery: A 20-year-old woman was dancing at Myrtle Beach Live. Another 20-year-old woman came up behind her, grabbed her by her hair and pulled her to the floor. She hit her, causing the victim's nose to bleed. The victim also suffered a swollen ankle. The suspect was thrown out of the club.

Nov. 27
Purse-snatching:
A 40-year-old woman said five young men walked toward her, and one grabbed her purse. She fell as she tried to get away. She got up and ran. Her purse contained identification and $3.

Nov. 25
Emergency protective custody:
A 22-year-old woman gave birth to a girl at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. The mother's urine tested positive for cocaine and tetrahydrocannabinol. The baby's urine tested negative for drugs, but a blood test was ordered. The mother said she used powder cocaine three or four times during her pregnancy. She said, ``I used cocaine and pot about four or five days ago.'' The baby was placed in the state's custody.

Emergency protective custody: A 31-year-old woman had a baby at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. The mother's and baby's urine tested positive for cocaine. The mother said: ``I only used crack once, and it was Wednesday night. I had a beer, too. I had a death in the family, you know.'' The baby was placed in the state's custody.

Nov. 27
Trespass after notice:
About 10:35 p.m., police saw a man get thrown out of a nightclub at 4640 US 17 S. Lounge management told the man to leave and not to return. He left but police saw him at the front door of the club 15 minutes later. He was told again to leave and not to return. Twenty minutes later, he came back on the property and was arrested. Alcohol was a factor in the incident.

Nov. 27
Criminal domestic violence: About 5:10 p.m., police responded to a domestic situation at 400 N. Ocean Blvd., , Unit 806. When officers exited the elevator, they heard someone yelling for help. Officers entered the residence, which they found in disarray. Police found a woman on top of a man, hitting him and scratching him on the head and shoulders. She yelled at him, ``I'm going to kill you!'' The woman, who was intoxicated, was arrested for criminal domestic violence. The fight reportedly started because the woman accused the man of having an affair. She became violent and tore apart the condominium. The victim called the condo's receptionist and asked her to call the police. The victim stated that they had been divorced for more than a year, but had kept in contact with each other after the divorce. The woman, who is from Columbia, said they had agreed to meet at his condo for the weekend.

Nov. 26
Simple possession of marijuana, driving under suspension, possession of sawed-off shotgun, possession of machine gun and failure to register vehicle:
Police stopped a man who was driving with expired tags. The man was driving under suspension and had failed to register his vehicle in the state. Police found a small quantity of marijuana, a Remington sawed-off shotgun, a machine gun and other guns and ammunition in the vehicle. The suspect was taken to jail.

SURFSIDE BEACH
Nov. 27
Stolen speakers:
A Surfside Beach man said his friend took speakers worth $200 from his home in the 700 block of Cypress Drive. The speakers were taken between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Stolen bicycle: Someone took a bicycle worth $200 from the parking lot of Eckerd Drugs at 110 US 17. A man said he was in the store for about 20 minutes, and when he went outside his bicycle, which was unlocked, was gone.

CONWAY
Dec. 3
Simple assault:
A 16-year-old boy heard rumors at Conway High School that another teen-age boy was going to beat him up after school. The 16-year-old was walking to his truck when the other boy approached him. The boy slammed the 16-year-old's truck door and tried to punch him, but missed. The boy hit the 16-year-old twice on the left side of his head.

Nov. 24
Injured person:
A 59-year-old woman was walking on Cedar Lane when a Labrador jumped on her, causing her to fall and hurt her foot. The woman was told to go to the doctor. The dog's owner was told to have the animal on a leash.

Nov. 23
Criminal domestic violence:
A 26-year-old woman said her 28-year-old boyfriend was sleeping in her child's bed. She told him to move so her child could get in bed. He got up, began cursing and fired a handgun. He threatened to kill her and left. When arrested, the man had a gun in his pants, and five live rounds and one fired round of ammunition.

Nov. 21
Child neglect: Police went to Conway Hospital after an 11-month-old boy tested positive for cocaine. The baby was taken to the emergency room after he ingested cocaine. The 17-year-old mother said she was at work when her 19-year-old cousin called and said the baby was foaming at the mouth, shaking and agitated. The baby was admitted and stabilized. Police asked a hospital official to notify the state Department of Social Services. Police, who were dispatched at 10:50 p.m., asked why they were not notified sooner about the incident, because the baby was moved to the pediatric section at 9 p.m. Hospital officials said they were ``swamped.''

MYRTLE BEACH
Informational report on assault:
A 22-year-old woman and her 19-year-old ex-boyfriend were talking in an abandoned trailer on Ocala Street. He exposed his genitals and asked her to perform a sex act. She said no. She pushed him away and called police.

LORIS
Shoplifting: A 30-year-old Tabor City, N.C., woman was arrested after a she went in a department store on Broad Street and stole a pair of pants. A 50-year-old said she saw the shoplifter take several pairs of pants into the dressing room. The complainant said the woman put on a pair of pants she took inside the dressing room. The complainant said the shoplifter put her pants on top of the pants she had stolen and tried to leave the store. When the shoplifter who had taken the pants was taken to the Police Department, she took off the stolen pants. The pants cost $5.

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH Dec. 5
Public disorderly conduct/intoxication:
About 1 a.m., a nightclub manager called police about a man who wouldn't leave the club at 100 N. Ocean Blvd. He was thrown out after he and his ex-girlfriend were involved in a disturbance. When police arrived, they saw him beating on the glass at the front door of the lounge. When an officer learned the man was drunk, he told him to wait in the parking lot for his friends. He refused and was arrested.

AYNOR
Dec. 12

Disorderly conduct: A 51-year-old man was arrested after an officer found him setting grass on fire between Frye and Butler roads. The officer found the man with a lighter in his hand and asked him why he had started the fire, which was on someone else's property. The man replied that the ``governor of South Carolina'' told him to do it because ``it would clean the road up.'' Four areas of land were on fire when the officer arrived. The officer arrested the man. Upon doing so, the officer smelled a strong odor of alcohol and realized the man had been drinking.

Dec. 11
Breaking and entering:

A 38-year-old woman reported that a 37-year-old woman came to her home on South Main Street. The complainant said the woman entered her home uninvited and came into the bathroom where she was. The complainant said the woman told her she wasn't having sex with her husband. The complainant said the woman's brother was at her house at the time and had to grab his sister and get her out of the home. The complainant said the woman then got into a truck and left.

Disorderly conduct: A 35-year-old man was arrested after a call was received at the Police Department concerning a man riding against traffic on a bicycle between Bluewater Road and the Ninth Avenue Extension. The man was found and told by a police officer that he would need to ride with traffic. The man went on his way.

Dec. 11
Malicious damage to property:
A 28-year-old man reported that he and a 23-year-old male acquaintance fought outside a club on Jenerette Street. The complainant said they fought against his Ford truck. The complainant said $600 worth of damage was done to the front passenger side of his truck.

Dec. 8
Shoplifting:
A 46-year-old female store employee said a 40-year-old man came into the store where she worked and stole two cartons of cigarettes after placing them in his pants. The employee said she called out to the man as he was walking out of the store, but he continued walking. The cigarettes were worth $31. The employee told a police officer that the man had been banned from the store in the past because of prior shoplifting charges. The complainant was advised to seek warrants.

GEORGETOWN
Dec. 12
Carjacking attempt:
A Georgetown woman said another woman tried to take her car after asking for a ride to a post office. The victim said the woman flagged her down on Church Street. She drove the suspect to the post office on Highmarket Street. When they arrived there, the suspect said she had a gun and threatened to kill the woman. The suspect ordered the woman into the back seat and told her not to do anything foolish. The woman got out of the car, leaving the suspect inside, and went to call police. No one was arrested.

Dec. 9
Assault on teacher: An 8-year-old Maryville Elementary School student hit his teacher several times while she was trying to control his temper tantrum. The teacher reported that the special education student had a tantrum because he didn't want to do his math. The student threw papers and kicked tables, and when a teacher tried to restrain him, he hit her on her arms.

MYRTLE BEACH
Dec. 13
Simple assault and battery:
A 20-year-old woman and her 32-year-old boyfriend came home after spending the night out at a club. She said he verbally abused her. She told him she was going to scream. He held a pillow over her face, grabbed her wrist and held her on the bed. She tried to escape and he bit her bottom lip. He began tearing off her pants. She was cut on her arm and suffered a swollen bottom lip. He was arrested.

Dec. 12
Shoplifting:
A cashier at Food Lion on U.S. 501 said a 30-year-old man was paying for items at her register. She noticed a package of chicken sticking out of his pants. She notified a store official, who grabbed the chicken and tried to hold the man until police arrived. During a struggle, the store official's ring finger was hurt. The suspect was arrested. The chicken was valued at $5

Shoplifting: A Kmart security officer saw two women place several items in their shopping cart and leave without paying. When confronted, the 23-year-old woman said she was told that ``shoplifting at Kmart was easy.'' She was arrested but was taken to the hospital because she was eight months pregnant and had stomach pains. The second woman, a 45-year-old, was taken to jail. They took a videocassette recorder, a toaster, two packs of nuts, a package of Pepsi, a Musk gift package, two undergarments, three videocassettes, two bottles of perfume, a bottle of cologne, an electric razor, a bottle of Musk perfume, one set of flatware and two Sony PlayStations. The merchandise was valued at $490.

Simple assault: A 20-year-old woman was talking to a friend at Food Lion at 1304 S. Kings Highway. She said a 41-year-old female acquaintance slapped her face. The acquaintance said the woman ``said something smart'' to her. The acquaintance was arrested.

Dec. 11
Simple assault on a police officer and public disorderly conduct/intoxication:
Police responded about 1:45 a.m. to 203 Second Ave. S. after a wallet was reported missing. The wallet turned out to be lost. When police started to leave, a woman and her boyfriend began arguing. The woman began cursing and shouting at her boyfriend and tried to assault him. When the officer stopped her, she hit him in the chin. The woman was taken to jail. She and her boyfriend were drunk.

Malicious damage to property, transmitting obscene messages, resisting arrest, disobeying a lawful order, riding a bike on a business sidewalk and riding a bike without lights: About 7 p.m., a 13-year-old boy was seen leaving a business at 318 Sea Mountain Highway in the Cherry Grove section shortly after obscene words were written on two vehicles in the parking lot. After police responded, witnesses described the boy, who was riding his bike west on Sea Mountain Highway. Police pulled beside the boy and asked him to stop. The boy laughed at the officer and continued pedaling down the street. The officer tried several times to get the boy to stop, but he would not do so until the officer cut him off and subdued him. The suspect was placed in police custody. The boy admitted to writing the obscene messages on the vehicles. Yellow paint matching the writing was found on the suspect's hands. The suspect stated that he was with another juvenile, but he was not involved in the malicious damage to the cars. The boy was taken to the North Myrtle Beach Municipal Complex and released to his father's custody after the charges were explained to the father. The father stated that he would take the bike away from the boy and deal a little more harshly with his son at home.

Dec. 7
Property damage:
Someone cracked the glass on the front door of the Consignment Corner at 325 U.S. 17. The business owner said someone also shot a hole in the store's front window. The incident happened between Dec. 6 and 7.

Governor of South Carolina orders man to set fire and "clean things up", while Conway High students burn toilet paper without being asked..

"Shoplifting at K-Mart is easy." and bad boys on bicycles come in all ages, but its the youngest who cause the most trouble.
